Whatever!

What to muse about today?

The tortoise and the hare

Today we went out with the girls.  They needed a bit of running around, energetic exhaustion.  We needed them to be entertained, and then tired.  After a bit of googling for local bike trails, we decided to try  a bit of the Hamden section of the Farmington Canal Linear Park.

After an aborted nap and a quick bite for lunch, we put the girls bikes and helmets in the trunk and headed out.  The girls were excited, they LOVE riding their bikes.  We found out that although Teagan can book on her bike Ashlin will end up winning, even with her short legs, as Teagan is too easily distracted by trees, flowers, bugs, the grass.

The park was very nice, once we got on the trail – we now know where to park for next time!  Lush and green, nice bridges and railings when needed.  It ran alongside the Merritt Parkway for a bit, so was a little loud, but eventually veered away.

Teagan impressed both of us, she was able to start her bike from a dead stop, even on a hill.  She could also get herself much further up hills than we expected.  Ashlin also impressed with her skill as well as with her stamina and perseverance.  We ended up walking/riding just shy of four miles – at least twice as long as they are used to.

We did figure out that we need at least one adult bike with us.  The girls get a bit too far ahead of us for comfort, with their unbridled enthusiasm.  Thankfully, we have one.  Though two would be even better!

We will go visit more of the canal when we can.

What a wonderful place to take the family. It looked very inviting, indeed. Glad the girls had such a great time. Yeah, biking four miles is tough even on an adult. :) The weather looked very accommodating.

It was really nice. And we didn’t even start at the pretty part! The trail was pretty flat and would be a LOVELY ride for an adult. The plan of tiring out the kids didn’t work quite as well as we had hoped. The girls had a great nap after, but Ashlin was up before 5am today. :(

I am surprised you can coax Teagan into a nap at this point. Will her all day K have a rest time or quiet time in the afternoon? My kids had 1/2 day K but I remember Katie’s 1st grade teacher reading to them while they sat on a rug and for the first few weeks of school, almost all the kids (not mine of course) would take a 15 min power nap as they adjusted to full day school. 4 miles is a lot!!!

We don’t get a nap from her every time we send her up, and she gets sent up four times over the weekend – when her sister gets sent up for a nap. She may break down once a weekend, if that. She basically doesn’t nap at day care at all.

She did say she slept a little after her ride, but not long. Ashlin gave us a 2 hour nap, which we had to wake her up from for dinner! LOL!

T’s kindy will be all day, and they said that they will accommodate the nappers, at least at first.

I am so jealous of your sleepers!! Mine were not wired that way, especially Thomas. He still fights sleep and insists that less than 8 hours is OK for a growing preteen. Except for when he is sick, I don’t think he has really napped since he was 3.

Well, Ashlin has her time – usually around 5am. Every. Day. She’s been pretty good to put down, but doesn’t stay after 5am most days. Teagan would sleep until 9am, once she’s convinced she does need sleep. Ash is convinced she doesn’t need naps any more, so she gets one quiet time, one nap. If we run her around, we get two most times… Thankfully.

I have a feeling that Ash will always be an early riser. Trying to convince her that she doesn’t need to wake the house is our current challenge.
