Whatever!

What to muse about today?

One #chest #xray later. Waiting

Waiting patiently after the chest x-ray

So, our little dot has pneumonia.  And an ear infection.  I can’t remember if it’s viral or bacterial, but does it really matter?  It;s still pneumonia.  I’m not sure if I was hoping it was RSV or this…  I’m not sure which is better and which is worse.  The doctors told us that she’d be prone to respiratory illnesses, thanks to her bout with the the croup on her first Halloween.

The RSV test wasn’t fun…  Well, getting the culture wasn’t fun.  Ashlin had no idea, nor did I, about what they were going to do with the long and skinny q-tip.  She was such a good girl, calming down quickly after they swabbed her nose.  It actually took her longer to calm down after being weighed than being swabbed.  For some reason, today, the scale, and stepping on it, really upset her.  Maybe her gaining almost a pound and a half in two months is making her nervous?

The test turned out negative, so we were sent downstairs for a chest x-ray.  She looked so tiny sitting on the table, waiting for the techs to get the film ready.  They had me hold her still while they took the pictures, one face on, one sideways, of her lungs.  We were in and out quickly, and then back upstairs to wait for the results.

Waiting back in the doctor’s office, Ashlin decided to sit pretty, then read Glamour.  Before the x-ray, she was sleepy and cranky.  Somehow, she got a second wind.  She was walking around the lobby, pointing to the fish, calling to them.  Pointing to the train set, the blocks, the tree.  Back in the exam room, waiting for the doctor, I fed her some fruit chews.  Between each one, she’d ask for more please, then thank me for giving her another one.  The doctor came in during this and was amused, tickled with how personable she was being.  But she also noticed how much Ashlin seemed to be working to breathe, although she had heard the lung crackle, she hadn’t noticed the more labored breath.

Anyway, we’re on antibiotics, Azithromycin and not amoxicillin, I almost made a huge mistake and let the doctor prescribe amoxicillin.  I can’t believe I didn’t remember that she had a huge allergic reaction to the amoxicillin.  Thank goodness the doctor caught herself.  We had even joked about it as she came in the first time.

Fingers crossed that the antibiotics work.  If she’s not better by Saturday, we have to move on to a more aggressive treatment.  It would be nice if this one was easy, and not complicated.  Can we have an easy button now, please?

She took the x-rays like a champ-just smiling away, and has been pretty happy through the whole thing-except for the breathing treatments-which only sometimes work. She’s been wheezing since Saturday, so nearly a week. It’s so hard to hear, but at our recheck today the doctor feels she’s slightly better, definitely not worse and we just have to wait. We were told 10-14 days of sounding like this! Hard to imagine. :( I hope Ashlin gets better quickly! It’s hard to have sick babies.”

      Megan, oh! goodness! I’ve been so caught up, I hadn’t seen that. Hope your little one gets better soon! Double respiratory issues!?! Yikes. Ash woke up around 6am, I gave her some water and resettled her. She asked me to stay, so I did. Listening to her breathe, once she fell asleep, was so sad. You could hear her working harder than normal to just breathe. Hopefully, she’ll turn around with the antibiotics and won”t need to have breathing treatments.

If I wasn’t so queasy around needles and blood I think I’d make a great nurse! (Ellie has an ear infection as well). It is definitely hard hearing them struggle with their breathing. I have not slept well (even though she has) just worrying that she’s ok. I will definitely be glad when we are past this!”

          At least she’s sleeping well. Ash is up every few hours, so I am too. Thankfully my two aren’t sick right now, knock wood. I can’t imagine having to deal with two! Hopefully your littlest gets to avoid this!

      Cheryl, the doc thought one thing, the radiologist thought another. They’re hoping the antibiotics do the trick, as she needs them for her ear infection anyway.

      I’m sorry you’ve been sick with it too. Seeing how it just totally wipes her out, I can’t imagine. Hopefully you’re better soon too!! Just let me know if you need a stuffed elephant and blankie to help you feel better. :)

    With the anitbiotics working and the rest she seems to be getting hopefully will do the trick on making Ms. Ashlin feel better quickly.!! I know it’s hard to watch your little ones when they are sick because they really don’t know how to tell you what/where/why it hurts. And the weather you guys have, seems to make things twice as bad than it really is. Hate getting out in the cold weather and can’t imagine how the little ones feel about when sick. Keep hugging and dosing thos antibiotics. {{{{Ashlin}}}}

      She’s got two doses in now… hopefully that fever will stay down. It was all over the place today… usually hanging around 100-101. She’s also slept most of the day, but did perk up a bit and ate a pancake and banana for dinner. So, maybe we’re on the up now… Fingers crossed!!

  12. Oh poor wee thing!! I hope she is feeling much better soon and then you will be able to relax a little. It is so stressful when your little ones are poorly :-( I’ve got everything crossed for an improvement by tomorrow :-) Hugs, Avis x
