Sazon, NYC

Yesterday I drove into the city with the girls. It was supposed to be all four of us, but Stu had to stay back last minute to do some work for the project he’s on. Mom had made arrangements for everyone to meet up at Sazon, a puerto rican restaurant, since her cousin was in town. Her family is very spread out, with most living in Puerto Rico, and a lot in Michigan. And, it was really this weekend and not last weekend like I had thought. But that’s another story.

Brooklyn Bridge

The drive in wasn’t bad at all. I was on time, give or take five minutes. The girls napped most of the way, but the minute I pulled up into a not so legal parking space, they both started crying. Dad takes Ashlin out of her seat, mom goes for Teagan. I’m a ping pong ball between them, trying to help dad get the stroller frame so Ashlin can be put down, and maybe sleep in the restaurant. And trying to ensure Teagan understands that she must always hold someone’s hand while she’s outside. Taxi cabs and New York City traffic does not stop for you, not even if you are a little, cute girl.

T & A & LaLa

So I head back to park the car.  I couldn’t find a spot on the road, nor could I find the parking garage that mom said gave discounts for Sazon patrons.  Around the block again I go, but this time, I got stuck on a ramp that was Brooklyn Bridge only.  Great.  Why would I want to go to Brooklyn when I was pressed for time, and had two crying babies waiting for me?  Mom reminded me as I drove off that they won’t sit the party until everyone was there.  Great.  More stress.  Whatever.  I ended up going across the bridge and then making a legal u-turn to go back to Manhattan.  Got back on Reade Street and found a parking garage.  Parked and dashed for the restaurant, full of apologies for making everyone wait 40 minutes for me to find a parking spot.

Teagan and Ashlin are still upset, not necessarily crying, but definitely not happy.  Tears hadn’t totally dried yet.  There was a firetruck that had gone by, and Teagan got very scared and was shaking, burying her head into her Aunt’s shoulder.  She was very sensitive to sound after that, and the restaurant was a bit loud.

Pernil as big as your head

Teagan ate just about everything:  Carne Frita, Camarones, Plantains, Calamari, Chicharrones de pollo, Pastales.  She had some Pernil (that was as big as your head!), some churrasco, some salad and arroz con gandules.  Everyone was impressed that the very English looking baby little girl ate such ethnic food, and with gusto!  She couldn’t get enough.

The food was fantastic.  I’m so glad I was given so many leftovers.  Stu and I will have dinner taken care of for the next three days!

Nifty Grafitti

Ashlin was still not doing well with all the noise, and to top it off, she was super tired.  I took her downstairs (there was a tapas bar!  With benches), and nursed her there.  It was so wonderfully quiet down there.  Ashlin went straight to it, no distractions allowed.  She must have been very hungry.  The walls were fantastic, all covered with interesting grafitti.  I got to read while she ate.

We told the waitress that it was my mom’s cousin’s birthday, so they came to the table singing the Puerto Rican Happy Birthday song – just Happy Birthday over and over to the birthday song tune.  Teagan tried to help herself to the dessert platter, but we quickly pushed it away.  She did get some bread pudding (didn’t like), Flan (LOVED) and some custard thing (also liked).  Renee fed her whipped cream, and Teagan loved that too.

Since I had an empty seat, I offered my sister a ride home.  She and Teagan chatted the entire time.  Ashlin fell asleep basically the second we got onto the Henry Hudson.

Purple Empire State

When I called Stu to let him know  I was on the way, he asked if Teagan remembered to tell Aunt NayNay the “thing.”  She hadn’t.  Of course, Renee asked, so I prompted Teagan, who then shouted “NayNay has no knickers!”  And burst into giggles.  I could probably explain it, but it’s much more fun if I don’t*.

Teagan fell asleep within minutes of dropping off Renee, and slept the entire ride  home.  Thankfully, my sister had picked up a Diet Coke for me, so I had a bit of juice to make it all the way home.

It was a good, but very tiring, time.  The food at Sazon was fantastic, though the music was a bit too loud for the little girls, and it was a bit hard to have a dinner conversation over, though we still had lots of fun!

~~

* Teagan was helping with laundry one afternoon.  She would hand everything to me and I would fold it.  Later, at the grocery store with Stu, they were talking about seeing Renee and doing laundry.  Teagan said NayNay had no knickers, because she didn’t have any in our laundry.  I had knickers and she had knickers and Dada had knickers.  LOL!

For 1-1-11 a SlideShow!

Ok, well, it’s her second snow, her first being down in PA, but she really wasn’t walking then :)  Does that count?

My mom and sister took her out Sunday to play, I was relegated to watching through the storm door – I’ll admit, I didn’t argue too much.  I didn’t have too many clothes options, and it was cold outside.  She had so much fun though – throwing snow up and trying to catch it.  Her gloves are a bit too big.  I think I was given another set of mittens that are in her closet.  I’ll have to go look.

In other news, we lost the two big Koi.  Stu thinks they died a bit back, when we had a big cold snap.  That there just wasn’t enough room – depth – in the pond for them, they were so big.  It doesn’t appear that we lost any of the smaller ones.  Stu was able to get the koi out when the pond “defrosted” a bit after the Christmas Snow and we got back from Puerto Rico.  It’s sad, they were beautiful fish, with personalities.  The six smaller ones are still shivering out there.  He put the pump in, to ensure that the pond doesn’t freeze solid, to give the remaining fish a bit more of a chance to winter over.

PS.  All the vacation pictures are up now!!

December 28, 2010

Today was a rainy day in Puerto Rico. We didn’t do too much – breakfast outside, went to the kiddy pool (Teagan does not like cold water!), nap, late lunch at Pinoñes.  (Gotta love fried food!)  Another nap (yay!) and then down to meet with a family friend in the hotel bar.  We sat around and chatted while dad chased Teagan across the dance floor and the stage.  She had a blast.  She went around and said “hi” to just about everyone that was at the bar.  LOL.  Such a social girl.

We eventually had to contain her – in a high chair – and kept her happy by giving her ice cubes from our drinks (yes, I had to have a mojito!)…  She got cubes from the mojito, a tom collins, grey goose and soda, rum and coke…  I ended up getting a cup of ice water from the bar as she really didn’t need that much exposure to alcohol.  She LOVED getting ice – she even said “More please ice dada.”  So cute!  Renee keep trying to get her to say “ice, ice baby!”  I think I might have that on video.

I’ll update once we get home with pictures…  I still don’t have access to a laptop.

PS.  For some reason, this entry was eaten by the WP app for my iPod…  it’s been cranky all week.  Anyway… Here’s yesterday’s entry :)

Merry Christmas!

And as a Christmas present – some beach shots:

I guess sand tastes good.  <shudder>

PS. For those that expressed concern, we’re all fine!  We were in Caguas, near Agua Buena, the epicenter of the earthqake.  On top of a mountain.  Mom and Renee were inside; dad, Stu, myself and Teagan were outside.  We heard it coming, it sounded like a train.  I initially thought a truck or something large hit a retaining wall for the house or something.  It only lasted about 10 seconds.  At 5.4 it was the strongest quake that I’ve been “awake” for.  Interesting feeling. We joked that it was a great Christmas present.  Then passed the Champagne.

How can you not love having this view for breakfast??  It’s just so pretty here.  Teagan is having a blast! She loves everything so far, except going in the ocean – can’t blame her, as the waves are very very rough.  Both Stu and I were knocked off our feet a few times!  She does love the little pool, but only if there aren’t any other kids there.

Things are going well, we have an adjoining room to my parents, so we can put Teagan down for a nap, and to bed, and not disturb her.  We get a bit more adult time, and now that my sister is here, will take advantage of La La and Pop Pop (or “hop hop” as Teagan has been saying lately) and go down to the hotel bar & club.

This morning, was awesome.  Teagan woke up chattering “da da da da luv luv luv.”   How sweet is that?  Then La La and Pop Pop took her down for breakfast and let Stu and I get ready a bit more leisurely.

We try to let her burn off some energy in the mornings as well – letting her chase the pigeons and grackles screaming “duck! duck!”  And doing hand stands:

When we go for rides in the car, Teagan loves it  – we ended up getting a “booster” style seat that we were able to pack in a suitcase - she’s been front facing for the first time ever.  Seeing the excitement on her face when she sees things – dog, ocean, tree – is fantastic.  I’ve told my dad that he needs to drive extra carefully, as Teagan’s still a bit young to be front facing.

I’m hoping that we don’t have too many issues when we get  back having her rear face again!

Anyway, I have to give back my dad’s notebook..  so, that’s the update for now :)

Hope everyone is having a happy holiday – and Merry Christmas!!

Yesterday we left on a jet plane. Stupid early. But it paid off. We ended up getting one of the open seats on the plane and were able to have Teagan sit in the middle. Wonderful! She actually did pretty ok on the plane – a little nervous on take off and landing, didn’t understand why she couldn’t run up and down the aisle – it was 7am and half the plane was asleep. But we arrived safe and sound.

November 17, 2009

Yay!  We survived both the flight and the weekend!  It was actually a very good time.  Teagan handled the flight down very well.  So much so that we got compliments on how good a baby she was.

The majority of the trip was taken up with family – obligations, lunches, dinners.  We did get a little time to go to the beach, the hotel pool and a fortress.  Teagan had a pretty good time in the ocean, shaking off getting sea water in her face until Stu and I passed her right as a wave hit her.  (My mom has all those pictures!)  We then went into the pool, because mom wanted to get a picture of her similar to one she had taken of me when I was in PR at 7 months – sitting alone on the pool steps.

We got a few good ones!  Teagan really enjoys the pool.  We got to go in the pool the next day – the ocean was too rough – and she put her face in the water several times…  would kick and splash.  So much fun to see her learn about the water!

Memorial service for Abuelita was nice, but all in spanish.  Lunch afterward was sort of fun.  Sitting with family that I don’t know well, that Stu doesn’t know at all, hoping they remember to speak english for him.  For us.  My spanish is too rusty :(  Everyone was totally taken with Teagan, la muñeca.  Turns out that “cousins” have a beach house that they might let us borrow.    Yay!

We ended up on Monday being able to get to the Fortress of San Felipe del Morro.  Turns out that my great-grandfather helped build the lighthouse.  Cool.

The way back wasn’t as successful as the way down, and a little bit melancholy.  I always feel sad leaving Puerto Rico.  I do so enjoy being there, even with the humidity.  Teagan wasn’t quite as good the way back, but we deserved it.  We really abused her schedule during the trip.  She didn’t get fed as regularly – don’t worry, we did feed her.  She didn’t get to sleep as often and as long as normal – she napped between events, in the car, during lulls, while sightseeing…

She cried several times by the end of the trip and also on the plane.  We didn’t get the same compliments as we got off back in Connecticut as we did on the way down, although when she was happy she made friends all around her – the lady behind us, the one across the asile from us, and the steward.  I was totallly blown away that she slept during the landing – didn’t need the bottle of milk that I saved for her for the return.  She only woke up as we put her into the cold stroller.  Almost midnight.  Poor baby.

I hope her routine – and she – recovers quickly.
