Cover of the cassette edition of Nicol William...

Stu and I went to the movies today.  We both had vacation days, the kids were in day care, so went to a matinee showing of The Hobbit.  It was a challenge to find a showing that started early enough for us to be able to pick the girls up on time.  It’s a very long film.  Surprisingly, no theaters had any morning showings.  The nearby 3D Imax didn’t have a showing that worked, but we had one 2D showing that did.    We had hoped to go see The Hobbit while we were at my parents for Christmas, but that didn’t work out.  Again, very long movie with no morning showings!

It was pretty good!  Long, with bits that weren’t in the book, but it was good.  An Unexpected Journey.  With dwarves singing.  Some of the “filler” bits were from other stories written by Tolkien, some weren’t.  Some made sense, some were foreshadowing for the Lord of the Rings, some were just nice.  Radagast with bird poo down the side of his face?  Well, that I don’t remember, but I do remember about him and birds.

There were some nice nods to the Lord of the Rings Trillogy in the Hobbit.  I’m looking forward to the next two installments, though I do need to study up on the dwarves.  I could only pull out three or four, though I can’t remember the name of the one in the hat. In the meantime, I may need to pull out my leather bound version, or maybe the unabridged audio…

November 29, 2012 ~ Teagan & Books

Tea reads to Ash

Look here Ashlin! Pictures!

Teagan has always had a love love relationship with books.  Once she realized books are stories, and a way to extend bedtime, while getting lots of snuggles and rocking with mama or dada. She loves books.  Always asking for one more at bedtime.  One of the best ways to punish her into towing the line is to threaten to take away bedtime books.

One of the books that we, well mostly Stu, read her was a Little Golden book version of 101 Dalmatians.  Teagan called it the “Nice Lady, Mean Lady” book.  Realizing that like Peter Pan, the book is based on a movie, she asked to watch the movie.  My version of the movie was on VHS, and at my parents.  Every time we went up, I’d forget to bring it back, then she’d ask to watch it.  Gah.  Repeat.

She has alternate titles to other books too.  The Painting With Picasso book is one she calls a “mean book.”  The painting of the acrobats scares her, the Lady Laughing (in her head) has a worm that crawls out, according to her.  We don’t read that one to her any more, it’s in Ash’s room now, she doesn’t seem to mind it, though she prefers Boynton.

Anyway.

Finally over Thanksgiving, we found the box the movies were in, and Teagan finally got to watch it.  Cruella freaked her out.  We fast forwarded through parts, at least the first time.  But she loved it.  Over the three days we were up at my parents, she must have seen 101 Dalmatians three times.  And The Aristocats, which she wasn’t sure about he first time, it does start off a bit scary.  She also got to see  The Lady and The Tramp, another movie for which she has the Little Golden book.

Those movies came back with us.  We left Pocahontas there.

May 27, 2012

Today and yesterday, we finally introduced Teagan to Disney. Well, to movies other than “Cloudy, With A Chance of Meatballs.” She’s probably been passively aware of the Princesses, (a pair of Princess underwear magically appeared in her drawer, and has a Sleeping Beauty dress-up), and other things Disney, she did get Fillmore’s Tent for her birthday. (It’s a conspiracy man!) Up until now, we’ve never really watched anything Disney.

We started with “Sleeping Beauty.” I talked it up over breakfast. How it was one of my favorites, with music from and inspired by Tchaikovsky. For giggles, we made her say Tchaikovsky a few times. She got pretty close, once. The credits confused her, she wanted the movie to start. I explained that it gave a brief sampling of the music in the movie, and that seemed to satisfy her. A little.

She was fascinated.  Glued to the tv.  Well, at least for the first bit, then, for her, it got a little slow and her attention lagged.  Too bad there wasn’t more bunnies in boots and owls in hats.  She wasn’t scared of Maleficent in the beginning.  It was the creepy castle and the Forbidden Mountain that scared her, a little.  Oh, and Maleficent turning into a mean dragon.  She loved how the dress went from pink to blue back to pink.

That was “Pink Dress, Blue Dress” for most of yesterday, until she started calling it “Sleeping Booty.”

Then we watched “Beauty & the Beast.”  This one totally drew her in.  She stood in front of the tv, open mouthed, for what seemed like half of the movie, which incidentally is about the length of her attention span.  There is more singing and music in that.  The wolves and Beast scared her a lot, she would snuggle up to either me or Stu until they were gone.  After a bit, Beast stopped frightening her, she saw him becoming the man who would break the Enchantress’ curse.  She asked to watch this immediately after finishing it the first time.  It was “Pink Dress, no, Yellow Dress” for a short while, until it became “Beast & Booty” or “Beast & Belle.”

Trying to avoid bedtime, she asked for both movies.

Today was “Winnie the Pooh” and then “Peter Pan.”  Pooh, she calls “Windely Pooh,” and she wasn’t overly impressed, but that could have been her attention span.  She wanted to go swing and slide.   “Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree” did pull her in, she thought it was pretty cool, and attempted to sing along to Little Black Rain Cloud.

After “Windely Pooh,” I tried Peter Pan, the first half of which was a hit.  She loved Tinkerbell and her “glitter like stars” that made the children fly.  The mermaids and indians?  Eh, they were pretty neat, but Michael has a teddy bear just like her.  As she started to loose interest and build her pillow “fight,” (it’s really a fort, but she doesn’t believe us),  and generally make a big mess, she declared “I Peter Pan!”

After dinner tonight, she asked to watch “Beast and Bell” and as the wolves came on, she said she was scared.  I asked if she wanted to fast forward, and she did.  ”Daddy forward please!”

I would have tried “Cinderella” or “Little Mermaid,” but never upgraded my old VHS versions to DVD.  And the VHS are at my parents house.  Now that she’s able to watch about half a movie without losing interest, I’ll have to get the DVD versions.

I don’t know if she needs to be aware of Princesses yet, or any of it, but I enjoy the movies, and I enjoy watching her watch them.  I’ll need to counter all the help-me-I-need-a-prince-to save-me with some self-sufficiency and fencing lessons.

Maleficent To Hit Theatres on March 14, 2014 | Mom Spark™ – A Blog for Moms.

I hadn’t heard about this before.  This is either an absolutely horrible idea, or horribly wonderful.  Maleficent has always been my favorite villainess.  Well, once I realized that she wasn’t real and couldn’t eat me.  Even then, there was always that little nagging corner of my mind that thought she could be hiding just behind the rock in forest that surrounded our house.  Once I realized how cool she was, I coveted the watch Disney made with her on it.  I didn’t want the Cinderella one I was given as much I wanted, needed, the one with Maleficent.

She always creeped me out.  Her entrance into the royal chamber at Princess Aurora’s birth, her exit.  Her transformation into a dragon in the middle of the thorn forest used to give me nightmares.  It wasn’t too hard to imagine her coming out of our forest.  Because of course Prince Phillip didn’t actually kill her.  He only wounded her.  She crept off to that big rock to hide under and heal.

I’ll have to keep an eye out for more on this movie…  Right now, I’m just not sure.

August 3, 2011

OMG!  They’re remaking the movie that terrified me as a kid.  The movie that haunted me, that gave me nightmares well into my 20′s, and also my 30′s, if i’m brutally honest.

It also started my need to watch other horror  movies, to see as many as I could.  Home, alone.  To read them.  To be stronger than I felt.  To not be scared.

This movie that had me jumping at shadows.  The movie that had me sleeping with my hands (and feet) under the covers for years.  You know.  If your hands are even the tiniest bit exposed from under the protection of the blanket, they get you.  If the sheets aren’t tight, they could get in.  I thought they would come get me.  And drag me into the fireplace.

I still don’t like loose sheets.  They need to be nice and tight and tucked in.  No drafts.  No way for little demonic creatures to get in.

I never remembered the name of this movie, I don’t think I ever knew it.  The scene that haunted me the most was the bathroom scene.  By the vicious little creatures attacking the wife, with a razor, using pin-like things as swords.  They were definitely not the Borrowers.

Disembodied voices calling out, from seemingly everywhere and nowhere.  Voices that make you look over your shoulder as you sit in a room.

I’m not sure if I’m happy they’re doing a remake, or terrified.  But because of the trailer I saw last night, I now know what the movie is called.  It’s called Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.

Although I didn’t know it, it was a made for TV movie.  It always seemed to be on TV growing up – the ABC evening movie on Saturdays, (or was it Sundays?) and sometimes the afternoon matinee.  I know at least one babysitter let me watch it.  Once, I snuck down and watched TV late at night after the rest of the house was asleep, and this movie was on.  (This was when we actually had a TV).  Watching this movie was a regret.  Almost every single time.  Still.  I couldn’t get enough of it.  That and some movie with a voodoo doll.

I don’t know if I’ll go see the remake.  It may not be a good idea.  To be fair, it looks like Guellermo del Toro has made it super creepy, even if he changed it a bit.  But he got the voice right.

For years, I didn’t live in a house with a fireplace.

This house has a fireplace.

Star Wars Series

So, Happy Star Wars Day!!  And Happy Birthday to Stu!

One of the sites I like to go to had an interesting story about how today was both Star Wars Day and Teen Pregnancy day.  Odd combo, weird that they’re both today.

They also had a story about “The Pirate Movie.”  I loved this movie when I first saw it.  It still has a soft spot in my  heart, though it is, as the author said, a terrible movie.  But how can you not like a movie with singing pirates and princesses?  LOL!  And a happy ending??  Makes me want to watch “Xanadu” again.

May the Fourth Be With You!

March 10, 2011 ~ The Karate Kid

The Karate Kid

Image via Wikipedia

Today, while grabbing screenshots for a PowerPoint for work – Yes, PowerPoint.  Snag-It is my friend – I watched the Karate Kid.  No, not the one with Ralph, but the one with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, and is about learning Kung  Fu not Karate.  It was ok, not bad.  I kept thinking the kids were just too young.  Maybe Ralph played the same age kid, but just looked older – wasn’t he 30 when he did the movie?  LOL.

Anwway, it made me cry.  I’m going to blame it on hormones though. The commercial for U-Verse (it’s not overdone, it’s a job well done! ) also makes me cry.  I suppose if I thought about it, I get misty for the cheese commercials too.  Behold the power of cheese.

I don’t remember the hormones making me this emotional last time.  At least not while still pregnant.  Maybe they did…  I do remember getting angry easily enough… Postpartum, that’s a completely different story.

March 10, 2011

Last night was a long night.  Started off watching Bubba Ho-Tep with Bruce Campbell.  I had heard/read that it was good, and it has Bruce – how could it be It was horrible.  Then the head cold that just won’t go away, that I’ve had since Sunday, doesn’t seem to respond to Benedryl any more.  (Yes, I had to take something, anything, it was so bad).  Eventually,  the Benedryl finally knocked me out.  Knocked me out so much I didn’t hear Teagan wake to a night terror or something.  Stu said she was sobbing horribly.  I didn’t hear her.  I may have noticed (a little) when he came to bed.

Around 1:45 I did wake up, in pain.  My back was throbbing.  First thought I had was that it was contractions.  I’ve been having Braxton Hicks and random contractions for three weeks or so already *.  It wasn’t that though, thankfully.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t get back to sleep, I couldn’t find a position in bed that would make it go away.  Down to the sofa, where I sat up for a while, as even reclining hurt.

As as aside, I’m pissed at Dish TV right now.  They’ve stopped carrying WTNH, which was the only station that had any sort of news at 3am.  Other than the cable news stations, of course.  So, there’s nothing to watch at 2:30, other than The Daily Show and The Colbert Report and then 1000 Ways to Die.

Sometime around 4am I finally fall asleep again.  The alarm went off way too early today.

I had another Chiropractor appointment this morning.  I told him about the pain.  He gave me some exercises to do that may help – one to stretch my lower back, one for my legs and one for the SPD.

So, again, left hip joint whatever doesn’t crack, but almost!  There was movement today, right one does.  Mid-back cracked, and that felt good.  Neck was uncomfortable, but feels better now.  My lower back is still bothering me, I’ve been sitting up most of the day, doing some cat/cow stretches as well, they just feel so good.

I have another appointment for Saturday morning.  Fingers crossed that my back is ok until then.

~~~~
* The Braxton Hicks are getting more and more painful.  I can’t walk fast or I’ll contract.  Sometimes just bending over will start one up.  Sometimes they’re 4 minutes apart, sometimes as much as 30 minutes.  They’re not real contractions that the midwives are worried about.  I haven’t needed to breathe through them, so, it’s just practice.  I’m tired of practice.
Too much snow
Too much snow
Yeah, there’s just too much snow now.  We got another 18.5 inches since last night.  It did look lovely at 5:30am, what I could see out the window over the snowline.  I think our second floor windows are half buried with the snow.  We need to shovel the roof.
Anyway, I cut the picture off, so you can’t see the swing buried in the snow.  There’s just too much of it.
Way too much snow
Way too much snow
Oh, you can see it in this one.  Teagan can’t even play in it, not really.  There’s just too much.  She can’t walk.  You barely see the walk. <sigh>
So, we officially have had the snowiest month on record.  Since they started keeping records. On top of the largest snowfall in 24 hours, snowiest January on record.  We’re not done yet.  I’m not sure if I want to break any more records.  Other than warmest February…
Stu ended up shoveling about half of the driveway before the plow could come and plow us out.  They showed up at 4pm.  (They also didn’t charge this time).  One hour after the town plowed our street.  It seems that the town plow – a big huge monster truck – got stuck just around the corner from our house.  For three hours.
Snow-covered Picnic table
Snow-covered Picnic table
Because I can’t think what more to say, today…  I’ll leave you with a great list of movies that deal with snow…  Gotta love Mamapop.com for compiling this.
I think I need to watch Ravenous.
PS.  The electric is working properly, as is the kitchen sink.  The dishwasher, however, has decided it doesn’t want to work any more.  <sigh>
